Frequently Asked Questions

WHY SELL BACK YOUR TEXTBOOKS?

The best source of used books is you, our customer. Having more used textbooks in stock is the single most significant way the UCLA Store can reduce your textbook costs. Our preference is to purchase them from you rather than purchase them from a used book company.

HOW ARE BUYBACK PRICES DETERMINED?

Buyback prices are determined by book lists submitted by instructors for the next term. If we know which books will be needed and we are not already overstocked, then the UCLA Store will pay 50% of the current retail price. If the instructor has not submitted an order at the time you try to sell your book(s), then you will receive that book's current market value. That value, determined by used book companies, is based upon the national demand for the book and whether or not it is a current edition. Wholesale buyback prices typically range up to 30% of the retail price.

WHY AREN'T ALL BOOKS ELIGIBLE FOR A 50% BUYBACK?

Some books are used in classes that are only taught once a year. In other cases, a book is replaced by a newer edition or by an alternate choice from another publisher.

HOW DO I CHECK THE BUYBACK VALUE OF MY USED TEXTBOOK?

Now you can check the buyback value of a book online with our new Price Inquiry feature. All pricing inquiries are subject to change at any time based upon current demand and/or the condition of the book(s). Since Buyback pricing is based on changing demands, final buyback pricing is always determined at the buyback location.

WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO SELL BOOKS BACK?

While the UCLA Store buys back books any time during the year, the best time to sell your books is the 10th week of the quarter when 50% buyback is first offered. As the needed quantity is filled, the buyback value decreases.

WHERE CAN I SELL MY BOOKS BACK?

Wholesale buyback is available all year round: Ackerman Union, Lu Valle Commons and Health Sciences Store. Additional locations are available during Finals Week.

There are expanded hours and locations at the end of each quarter, during 10th week and finals.

ARE THERE ANY TYPES OF BOOKS YOU DO NOT BUY BACK?

As a rule, we do not buy back the following types of academic materials:

  • Loose leaf books
  • Course readers
  • International editions
  • Instructor editions
  • Software

In almost all cases, when a book is replaced with a newer edition, the old edition is no longer eligible for buyback. As this is not always the case, we are happy to check your old editions to see if they are eligible for buyback.
